New York City is one of the most visited cities on this planet, it also happens to be one of the most expensive. Traveling there on a budget can be a tough challenge, but there are at least a handful of hostels that should match your price range.

There are so many places to see in New York that most people end up spending a lot of time in the different areas. That said, there is also a high demand for hostel rooms throughout the great state. Before you go, treat the hostel like a hotel and plan ahead because many of them will be full of reservations during the travel season.

If you are coming from Europe, you will first notice that the prices of the hostels are a bit higher than what you would be used to paying there. Another New York travel tip is to make sure you are budgeting properly because you don’t want to end up on the streets at night.

So you’re ready to start looking for some great hostels to stay in. I am going to recommend 5 of my favorites that were in a great price range, fun and that will allow you to experience New York as if you were one of the regulars. You can imagine that there are many hostels, so if you don’t like what you see here, start looking for other options.

The New York Loft Hostel:

I wanted to make sure I start with this hostel because it is one of the funnest and cleanest out there. The New York Loft Hostel is packed with all the comforts of a hotel, and is also close to everything you would like to be close to. How close? I’m talking about only 10 minutes from Union Square and only a couple of blocks from the best subway system in North America. Every day you can start with a free breakfast in the common room, which is where I met all kinds of great people. Also, the place has a pool, hot tub, and a TV room complete with all the goodies. This hostel also has the option of private rooms for much less than a hotel still. As for regular rates, expect to pay around $ 25 USD per night, assuming you’re staying in one of the nice common rooms.

Hostel L:

Do you like a clean life and an incredible view to accompany your New York experience? L Hostel is a multiculturally owned and operated facility that goes beyond making this one of the cleanest hostels on the East Coast. I wish I could post photos on Ezines because I bet you couldn’t say this hostel is not a hotel. Now let’s talk about that view I mentioned earlier. The L Hostel has a private rooftop terrace with pristine views of Harlem. They also have private rooftop rooms for rent that feature incredible views and private terrace access that can’t be beat. Private rooms will cost as little as $ 100 USD and shared rooms cost around $ 25 USD!

New York International Student Center

If Manhattan is your final destination, then this place is one of your juicy hostel options in the posh downtown area. As the name suggests, you will see a younger crowd here, which is great if you are looking to meet new and interesting people. This hostel has all the usual amenities like a full kitchen, clean bathrooms, and best of all, it’s right next to Central Park! This hostel is one of the busiest, so be sure to try to book early, if not, try signing up for a cancellation list just in case. This hostel has a summer special of $ 25 USD per night, which is great, you can’t beat that price for the location.

Broadway Hotel & Hostel:

If an elegant stay awaits you, be sure to visit this unique boutique-style hotel and hostel. The upper west side of town is where most of the action is, and the Broadway Hotel & Hostel is within walking distance of several popular spots … not to mention it’s on Broadway! The hostel is full of luxurious boutique style rooms to rest and play, it almost has a gothic touch in its decoration. A good part of the place has recently been updated from the private rooms with flat screens to the gourmet kitchen with all the trimmings. This hostel is very popular, so plan ahead and expect to pay around $ 30 USD per night.

461 Times Square Hostel:

I couldn’t fail to mention at least one hostel that is located within the famous Times Square entertainment district. If you want to stay amid the hustle and bustle, close to all the fun, this may be the place for you. Because this place is so popular, there is a 3 night minimum stay requirement, so be sure to book early to catch this great spot. This hostel has tons of free options including towels, WiFi, and city guides / maps. Prices here are competitive with the rest of the city and expect to pay around $ 30-40 USD for a night stay here.

New York is a must see before you die in my books so I hope you have luck reserving a hostel. Remember to try to book in advance because during the warmer months it can be difficult to close a place, especially for long periods of time.
