I’ve always used a Uniden race scanner to keep up with NASCAR events, and it has never disappointed me. So when my old unit died, I decided to purchase the Uniden SC230 scanner with pre-programmed NASCAR / Busch frequencies. This is a new device for me, but I loved it right away. So I wrote this review to inform others about the benefits of using this product.
Design
The unit is a nice and practical scanner with the dimensions of 2.9 ” x 1.4 ” x 4.6 ” and a weight of 0.49 pounds. It is very light, portable and easy to use. The overall appearance is fine, I even like the orange side of the scanner. Adds aesthetic value to the device. Other than that, the controls are very intuitive and you won’t have a hard time navigating through them.
You have the option of operating this device via AA alkaline or rechargeable batteries or via an AC / DC power source. It’s really a great Uniden racing scanner and it even has the NASCAR logo on its front panel, which makes me like it more. It even has a belt clip and a wrist strap, so wherever you keep it, it’s always safe.
Scan and audio output
This Uniden racing scanner has many features and many more channels. You have 1600 typical channels and a maximum of 2500, how could you get bored with this? There are ten service searches that make it easy to find your frequencies, whether you are looking for frequencies for Public Safety, News, Amateur Radio, Marine, Rail, Air, CB Radio, FRS / GMRS, Racing, and other searches. You can find the specific frequency you want to listen to and search certain categories faster and more efficiently. You can even set priority channels that you can easily search if you need to know if there is activity on those particular frequencies.
As for race car fans like me, there are pre-programmed race frequencies where all you have to do is search. There are specially pre-programmed frequencies for NASCAR Nextel, Busch, Craftsman, Indy, ARCA and Champ series races. There is also the quick race scheduling feature that allows you to easily enter race specific information. The Quick Car Select feature allows you to listen to a specific car exclusively at the push of a button. The scanner also has hotkey functions, much like speed dials that allow you to instantly set the frequency for a specific car, race, or system at the touch of a button.
The audio output from this device is 320mW through the speakers, and you can also use headphones that produce 30mW audio output through 32-ohm headphones, or 6mW into 64-ohm headphones. You will definitely find this scanner excellent in sound production, so you will have the best time while tuning in to your favorite racing channels. Other features
The display backlight has a special feature when it is at night, and it is called Backlight-On-Squelch, which is a trademark of Uniden. The light only illuminates when there is activity on the frequency you are tuned to so you are alerted and it can also save power. The attenuator eliminates interference from other signal sources at your location. You can even set your scanner’s delay from 0 to 5 seconds so you can shorten or lengthen the response timeout before the device continues scanning through other channels. You can also block frequencies you don’t want to scan or search, and you can block up to 200 channels, saving you time during scans and searches. There is a channel alert feature that you can use to always be alert when there is activity on the frequency you specify. Different channels, race channels, groups, and other frequencies can even be named using the text labeling feature, which allows you to enter names for important frequencies of up to 16 characters.
